Last week the filming of Inventory 2021 by Pınar Öğrenci took place in compliance with the current hygiene regulations.

Berlin based artist and lecturer Pınar Öğrenci (1973, Van, Turkey) has a background in architecture, which informs her poetic and experiential video-based work and installations that accumulate traces of ‘material culture’ related to forced displacement across geographies. Her works are decolonial and feminist readings from the intersections of social, political and anthropological research, everyday practices, and human stories that follow agents of migration such as war, state violence, collective movements, as well as industrial and urban development projects.

Her work for this year’s exhibition is a new version of a film that was originally shot in Munich in 1975 by Yugoslavian Black Wave director Želimir Žilnik. The remake by Pınar Öğrenci is set in the East German city of Chemnitz and based on the anti-racist struggles of people living in the city. Unlike the original Inventory, in which guest-worker immigrants from the European South descend the stairs of their building, in Öğrenci’s remake migrants, mostly Middle Eastern and Asian walk up the stairs and Germany is depicted as not a temporary but a permanent ‘home’ for immigrants.

Thanks to the participating families for their trust and transparency. We are looking forward to show the film as part of the exhibition.
