Evaluation of the findings of the committees of inquiry into the NSU complex

Research project and project objectives

2022 marks the eleventh anniversary of the self-uncovering of the so-called “National Socialist Underground” (NSU). The criminal investigation into the crimes of the core trio has been completed. The German Bundestag and the state parliaments of several federal states have carried out important investigative work in parliamentary committees of inquiry (PUA for short). The committees of inquiry have made numerous recommendations for reforms in areas such as the police and judiciary. In their current coalition agreements, both the Free State of Saxony and the federal government are calling for further discussion of right-wing extremism in general and the NSU in particular.

The study “Evaluation of the Results of the NSU Investigation Committees” serves the following overarching objectives:

  1. Assessment of the status of implementation of key recommendations from the various NSU committees of inquiry and other civil society and academic investigations and documents
  2. Presentation of an overview of possible courses of action from these documents for the Saxon State Ministry of Justice and for Democracy, Europe and Equality (SMJusDEG)

Procedure

The study is based on document analyses and qualitative-methodical individual and group interviews with actors from the judiciary and civil society. The project is being carried out by the IDZ / Amadeu Antonio Foundation in cooperation with academic and civil society partners.

The study is being conducted on behalf of the Saxon State Ministry of Justice and for Democracy, Europe and Equality (SMJusDEG).
