App for the digital place of remembrance

“Remember the Future” is a digital intervention in public space. The app reveals the local interconnections of the NSU complex and shows how closely right-wing terror was linked to structures in Chemnitz. At the same time, a virtual place of remembrance is being created where there is a political void in the physical space. The app is available in German, English and Turkish.

More information about the project.

Download the app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.

2. if you are on site at the Doku-Zentrum:

3. if you are not on site:
Download the QR code and print it out on an A4 sheet of paper. Stick the QR code on a wall at a height of about 1.5m. Make sure that there is a large free area in front of the wall. The free area should be about 14×8 meters, with the QR code in the middle of the long side.

Note on augmented reality (AR):

“Remember the Future” uses a technology called augmented reality – the real world is captured by your device’s camera and overlaid with digital content. They can move around and explore freely. Move towards objects that you see on your smartphone to trigger audio clips.

The positioning of the objects depends on the scanned QR code. If objects are positioned strangely (too low, too high, in a wall, etc.), return to the QR code and hold your camera on it again for a few seconds. If this does not help, it is best to restart the app. Your progress is saved and you can go back to where you were via the chapter selection.

Positioning works best in bright locations with lots of detail and few trees, as the movement of the leaves can interfere with AR tracking.

Procedure

Objects and/or markers will appear around you in each chapter. Move towards them and press on the pink-red circle that appears when you are close enough to start the audio recording. If you move too far away from the position of the marker, the audio recording will stop.

As you listen to the recording, the progress bar at the top of the screen fills up. This shows you whether you have discovered all the audio recordings in this chapter.

After you have listened to a certain number of recordings, a button will appear at the bottom right of the screen to continue to the next chapter.

You can find more information in the instructions.
