Stories of the survivors

The hairdressing salon in front of which the bomb detonated was much more than just a store: it was a place of encounter and community. The film“Der Kuaför aus der Keupstraße”by Andreas Maus (available in the media library of the Federal Agency for Civic Education) tells the stories of the survivors and gives them a voice. It not only documents the attack, but also the long road to recognition as victims of right-wing violence.

“On a sunny Wednesday, we were unsuspecting, the bomb exploded.
We were standing outside the store, as usual, because it was too warm inside (Kuaför Özkan, a hairdressing salon). There were only two of us that day, me and Attila.

We were about to say goodbye when the bomb exploded.
Flames everywhere, no sight. Blood. People from the surrounding stores were handing out water and napkins. We sat on the curb outside the store after the explosion and little by little you could see the nails

Many windows were cracked and shattered by the detonation, there were shards everywhere. You could hear screams, I had a torn ear drum.
Most of us have post-traumatic stress disorder from it, we were criminalized.”
